10 Le 25 janvier, la Réserve naturelle a été au- ditionnée par la gendarmerie, qui a sollic- ité son expertise dans le cadre de plusieurs procédures en cours impliquant des travaux sur certaines plages, notamment aux Terres Basses, afin d’estimer les dommages que ces travaux ont pu occasionner aux sites de pon- te des tortues marines. En effet, le contexte de la reconstruction post-Irma a parfois incité les propriétaires de parcelles en bord de mer à ériger des murs le long du rivage, sans te- nir compte qu’ils mettaient ainsi en péril la reproduction des tortues marines en détrui- sant leur habitat naturel, les tortues nichant en haut des plages. L’ensemble des tortues marines et leurs habitats essentiels d’alimen- tation et de reproduction étant protégés, les contrevenants s’exposent à des poursuites qui peuvent entraîner la saisie des matériels et engins ayant servi à commettre l’infraction. In fact, the reconstruction of the island post-Irma often encouraged owners of land along the beach to build walls along the shoreline, without realizing they were causing a problem for the reproduction of sea turtles by destroying their natural habitat, as turtles nest at the top edge of the beach. As all sea turtles and their essential habitats for reproduction and feeding are protected, the equipment and ma- chines that served to break the law could even- tually be seized.
